29.01.2010 | Patent Asset Index measures the technology strength of companies
Proprietary technology is an importance source of competitive advantage. Companies thus invest large sums into R&D and apply for patents on most of their important technology.
The Patent Asset Index is used to benchmark corporate patent portfolios. It compares the entire current patent portfolio of companies in a global economy. The methodology has been developed based on academic research. It overcomes the critical limitations of prior approaches. It stands for a transparent methodology and a reliable measurement of the competitive impact of the patents.
Experts from companies have scrutinized the concepts and practical implementation of the Patent Asset Index and support the new method. A scientific publication discussing the theoretical foundations as well as the implementation and the validation of the Patent Asset Index is forthcoming (in peer review process).
The spin-off company PatentSight has developed software and databases that implement the Patent Asset Index. It offers the Patent Asset Index and related software and services to the public.
About the Methodology
All worldwide patents and patent applications are analysed to calculate the Patent Asset Index. The current extent of patent protection in global markets (“Market Coverage”) and the relevance of the patents for subsequent developments (“Technology Relevance”) of all patents are evaluated. These two factors determine the “Competitive Impact” of a patent. The Patent Asset Index measures the combined competitive impact of all patents in a portfolio and thus corporate technology strength.
An overview of the methodology is available as a presentation.
